Bedtime stories help children feel safe enough to let go.

But storytelling doesn’t stop at reading.

During this challenge, you moved from telling stories in your own words to adding your own unique details and eventually creating your own.
Along the way, you invited your child to join in and have fun.

Today, take a few minutes to look back on your experience.

1. What worked well, and why?

  • What felt different at bedtime, even slightly?

  • Did your child settle more easily?

  • Were there moments where you felt calmer, more present, or more connected?

  • What role did storytelling play in those moments?

2. What didn’t work, and why?

  • Where do you still feel stuck at bedtime?

  • What seems to make things harder in those moments?

  • Did storytelling feel difficult at any point?

You might be wondering:
“How am I supposed to come up with a new story every night?”

The good news is, you don’t have to.

Here’s a simple way to turn one story into an endless stream of bedtime stories:

✨ Start with a story you already told.
✨ Then imagine the same characters, in the same world, doing something else.


This takes the pressure off you, as the storyteller.

It also makes your stories more engaging.

Over time, the character becomes familiar, almost like a friend.
Your child starts to look forward to the next part.

This is how all story series work.
It’s also how I create new stories in my Feathernest Woods and Silverbrook Valley worlds.

You can do the same.

Let’s look at an example with Jojo

In Jojo and the Dream Adventure, Jojo learns that sleep opens the door to wonderful dream adventures.

In Jojo and the Night Wizzy Lost His Helpers, Wizzy loses his helpers because Jojo’s room is messy.

These stories naturally connect.
Jojo meets Wizzy and then continues having adventures with him.

What could happen next?

  • Jojo asks Wizzy what else he can do besides creating dream adventures

  • Jojo asks for a dream where he swims with dolphins

  • Jojo goes to school and tells his friends about Wizzy

  • Jojo’s mother asks how he learned to keep his room tidy

  • Jojo’s sister is crying because she lost her favorite toy, and Jojo helps her

You don’t need big or complicated ideas to make a story.

Day 9

Take a story you’ve already told.

Let’s use Jojo and the Night Wizzy Lost His Helpers as an example.

Start by bringing your child back into the story:

“Remember when Jojo cleaned up his room and had that amazing dream adventure?”

Then you can say:

“Do you want to know what happened the next day…?”

Now, continue the story in your own words.
Stay with the same characters, in the same world.

There’s no way to get this wrong.

Today, I want to talk about something powerful:

Stories help children work through their challenges.
Instead of talking about solutions, they show them in action.

In Lela the Elephant and the Silly Shadow Show, Lela is afraid of shadows.

In the story, she discovers the shadow comes from something familiar.
Then she turns the shadows into a game and has fun playing with them.

Instead of just hearing an explanation, she experiences it.

The stories you’ve been telling already follow this pattern:

  • The character faces a small challenge

  • Something helps or changes

  • The character feels calm again

Day 8

Now it’s your turn.

1️⃣ Choose a character
Lela the Elephant or any other character your child loves

2️⃣ Think of a small challenge your child is facing
For example, they may not want the lights off

3️⃣ What might help?
For example, a small nightlight

4️⃣Tell a small story where the character:
✨ faces the challenge
✨ finds something that helps
✨ feels calm and reassured

There’s no way you can do this wrong.
You’ve already been doing this.

If it helps, you can look at a sample story below.

If creating your own story doesn’t feel right today,
You can use the summary below and tell the story in your own words.

Lela the Elephant and the Little Glowing Light

If it helps, here are the main events:

  • Lela is getting ready for bed when Mama Elephant turns off the light

  • Lela feels scared in the dark and asks for the light to stay on

  • Mama Elephant says she knows something that might help

  • She brings a small nightlight and turns it on, filling the room with a soft glow

  • They take a few slow breaths together, and Lela begins to relax and fall asleep

Here is one way you could tell it:

Lela was getting ready for bed.
Mama gave her a hug and turned off the light.

“Wait…” Lela said.
“Can you leave it on? The dark feels scary.”

Mama sat down beside her.

“I hear you,” she said.
“I think I know something that might help.”

She turned on a small nightlight.
A soft, warm glow filled the room.

“Look,” Mama said.
“You still have light… but it’s softer.”

Lela looked around.
Her room didn’t feel so scary anymore.

Mama stayed close, and they took a few slow breaths together.
In… and out.

Lela’s body began to relax.
She snuggled into her blanket, feeling safe and calm.
Soon, her eyes closed… and she fell asleep.

During the previous days of this challenge, we moved from reading stories to telling them, one step at a time.

Many parents find it hard to come up with new ideas.

I remember thinking,
“This is ridiculous… I’m not a storyteller.”

That inner voice made it hard to think of a new story each day.

But here’s what I discovered.

Day 7

Choose one of the stories below:

Ask your child a simple question:
“What do you think happens next?”

Listen to their answer. Jot it down if it helps.

Tonight, tell the story in your own words and include their idea.
Most children love hearing their own ideas come to life.
Notice how your child responds to a story they helped create.

You can use the coloring pages below if it helps start the conversation.
I’ve also included the main events as a guide if you need them.

After reading, ask your child:
“What do you think happens next?”

  • The second way is storytelling.

  • Fifi tries all three and chooses storytelling as her favorite.

When I started making up stories for my son, he quickly realized we weren’t tied to a fixed script. So he started adding his own ideas.

Every night, he would say,
“Tell me the story where …”

His ideas weren’t always easy to follow.
But they came with giggles and his full attention, so I kept going.

If your child starts asking for things while you’re making up a story, celebrate it.

It means your child is engaged and connected.

Like me, you may find it hard at first.

To make it easier, we’ll practice adding a detail to a story you already know.

Day 6

Choose one of the following stories to print:

Tell the story in your own words.

When you reach the end, add one small detail.

Below, you’ll find one simple idea for each story. You can use it as it is.

If telling the story doesn’t feel right today, read it instead.

After the story, ask your child:
“What do you think happens next?”

  • Sissy’s room feels crowded with too many toys

  • Stripy the tiger tells her some toys feel forgotten

  • Sissy starts looking and finds toys hidden away

  • She chooses her favorite toys to keep close

  • The other toys go to new homes and are happy

  • Sissy’s room feels calmer, and she falls asleep peacefully

Add this to your story if you want:

The next day, Sissy takes a walk outside and sees Momo the monkey playing on a tree.
He tells her about his new life.

Jojo and the Night Wizzy Lost His Helpers (ages 5-6)

  • Jojo doesn’t want to miss anything by falling asleep

  • One night, he meets Wizzy the Wizard

  • Wizzy tells him that dreams are adventures that happen while we sleep

  • Jojo starts to feel curious and willing to try

  • He relaxes, falls asleep, and enters a magical dream

  • When he wakes up, he realizes sleep can bring wonderful experiences

Add this to your story if you want:

When Jojo wakes up, he says, “Thank you, Wizzy, for the adventure.”
“Next time, I want to visit the ocean and swim with dolphins.”

You catch every little reaction and follow their lead.

There’s no “right” way to tell your story.

You might like a slow, quiet style.
Or may want to bring the story to life using sound effects, pauses, and enthusiasm.

Start with what feels natural today.

Over time, you’ll develop your own style and adjust to your child as you go.

As you tell it, notice where your child leans in, relaxes, or stays engaged.

As you read, pause naturally and make a little more eye contact.

Most of us don’t feel like natural storytellers.

Today isn’t about creating a story from scratch. You’re simply retelling the story you read on Day 1, in your own words.

You don’t need perfect words.
Your child is looking for connection, not a polished story.

When you tell a story in your own words, there’s no page between you.
You can watch your child’s reactions and connect more deeply.

Day 3

Choose one of the following stories to print:

Tonight, before reading, invite your child to take care of their bedroom together.

  • Put away one or two things each.

  • Ask them if they want a favorite stuffed animal beside them in bed.

  • Help them notice if the room feels a little more peaceful.

If your child isn’t interested, that’s okay.

The goal today isn’t to organize the room.

The goal is to begin noticing how the space around them feels.

✨Then sit close and read the story.

Bedtime resistance can feel personal.

For years, I believed my son was being difficult on purpose because he always pushed back the moment I asked him to go to bed.

When he was five, I discovered that telling him stories and staying close helped him feel safe. That’s when I understood he wasn’t trying to make things hard for me.

He really needed my support.

A few years later, he told me he had been afraid of monsters. He used to imagine I was creating a protective force field around the two of us to keep the monsters out.

I wish I knew that when he was five.

Bedtime is hard for many families.

When my son was younger, he refused to go to sleep.

One evening, after trying everything else, I said, “If you come to bed now, I’ll tell you a story.”

He stopped what he was doing and came straight into the bedroom.

His curiosity was stronger than his resistance.

Bedtime became easier after that.
No negotiating. No back and forth. Just an easy transition into something he liked.
